MANTEO, N.C. -- A 12-foot alligator has been struck and killed by a vehicle on a road in Dare County.

Jay Eddy with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service says the alligator was killed shortly before midnight Sunday along U.S. 64 in the Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge.

Crews used a backhoe to remove the gator's body. The alligator weighed about 800 pounds.
