(Tallahassee.com) - Like it or not, Florida State University officially unveiled its new logo and uniforms for multiple sports the day before its annual Garnet and Gold Game.

Members of the track and field, baseball and softball, soccer, volleyball, basketball and of course football teams paraded the new threads for anxious fans Friday to mixed feelings.

While most were ecstatic about the new uniforms, the hotly contested logo change — being touted as an updated, refined look — was not as well-received by some.

FSU senior Andrew Moskowitz said the new look was a surprise, but one that he thinks will grow on fans.

"I was expecting something more modern looking, it looks sort of cartoonish," Moskowitz said. "It's not quite what I was expecting, but it's all right. We'll get used to it."

FSU athletics officials have worked with Nike for the past two years on redesigning the logo and uniforms for consistency across all athletics programs, while trying to maintain the integrity of the university and the Seminole Tribe of Florida.

Assistant Director of Athletics Rob Wilson said the idea is to create an unmistakable brand for the university.

"We tried to link it together so that all the uniforms say the same thing," Wilson said. "We want to make sure when you see a softball game, you know that's a Florida State uniform right away. We wanted to kind of all tie it together."

He said even he, having worked in the FSU program for 27 years, had to do a double take when the new design was unveiled.

"I think people will come around. Everyone resists change. It's just part of it," he said. "When I saw the logo for the first time, my head kind of spun around a couple of times, but it grows on you."

Some were not so appreciative of the change. David Hightower was carrying a sign reading "Tradition matters. #Keepthischief," with the previous logo on it. He said the new design represents more than a minor change.

He was fine when other elements were altered, but is not a fan of the new logo.

"All the other symbols changed over the years; the spears, the lettering, but the logo has stayed the same," Hightower, a 2003 FSU graduate said. "That's not our chief, that's not our Seminole head. The new jerseys look great; just take that logo off of it."

Members of the Seminole Tribe of Florida were also on hand for the Friday unveiling.

Norman "Skeeter" Bowers, assistant to Seminole Chairman James Billie, agreed the logo would take some getting used to, but sentiments would change once the 'Noles hit the field. He said when the new design was shown to the tribe, the designs from years before were also shown.

"It's similar," Bowers said. "If anything it's a younger version of the traditional logo. What I really like are the uniforms.

"Anything that has to do with change it's always difficult to get used to, but as we go into the season, I think everybody will get used to it," Bowers added. "I just hope Jameis Winston and the Florida State football team can duplicate what they did last year. If they can do that, who's going to worry about the logo?"
