In a battle of Class 6A District 8 titans, Armwood downed Jefferson in what will probably turn out to be the district championship game, 28-9. The win means the Hawks are still undefeated and the Dragons needs them to stumble in order to wear the district crown.
Jefferson, who wore No. 60 decals on its helmets to honor alum and former NFL player Rick Caseras who passed away this month, scored first. After a field goal, Deondre Porter threw a bullet to Chavez Pownell to put the Dragons up 9-0 in the second quarter. The nine points were already the most points Armwood had surrendered in a game this season.
The Hawks scored just before the half when Noah Johnson found Talvin Bailey for a 45 yard touchdown connection. Armwood trailed 9-7 at halftime.
Bailey wasn't done. On the opening kickoff of the third quarter, he fielded the kick at the 5-yard line and raced up the middle of the field for a touchdown. Armwood never looked back. They scored 28 unanswered points.
Jefferson came into the game 2-0 in the district after wins over Hillsborough (28-23) and Robinson (39-22). Armwood only allowed 2 points to Hillsborough in a blowout win and shutout Robinson last week.
The Hawks have outscored teams 172-25.
Next week the Dragons continue district play at Leto.
