(CBSSports.com) - Rays lefty Matt Moore has decided to undergo Tommy John surgery, the pitcher has told Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times. Moore, 24, was recently diagnosed with a partially torn UCL and had been evaluating whether to have surgery or to attempt the rest-and-rehab route in an effort to save his season. Now, though, he'll miss at least the remainder of 2014.

"What was coming out, it's a shame to be have to be shut down right now but it just wasn't comfortable," Moore told Topkin. "Being stuck in the position I am right now, where it's not exactly comfortable but it's not exactly completely broke, it's kind of one of those things where you know it's going to get worse."

As Topkin notes, Dr. James Andrews will perform the surgery on April 22.

The highly regarded Moore has a career ERA of 3.53 (109 ERA+) across parts of four major-league seasons.

As for his replacement, Cesar Ramos figures to remain in the Tampa Bay rotation, at least for the time being.
