Gainesville, Florida -- SEC offenses know where Tampa's Vernon Hargreaves III is at all times. The reigning National Defensive Player of the Year is always lurking in The Swamp.

"I wasn't expecting too much. I wasn't expecting too little," Hargreaves said a year after intercepting three passes as a Gators freshman. "I played really well and kind of surprised myself a little bit."

He didn't surprise his coaches. Hargreaves was a star locally at Wharton High School and took his skills to new heights in college.

"He's a competitive guy," said Florida head coach Will Muschamp. "I'd like to say it's coaching but some guys have natural ability."

Hargreaves recorded 11 pass breakups last season, which tied the school record for true freshman that was set in 2008 (Janoris Jenkins). Despite his success, he feels like he has a lot more work to do to get to where he wants to be.

"I feel like I'm getting way better and I need to get way better," he said. "There's a lot I can improve on and I think I'm going to get it done."

Hargreaves sat down with 10 Sports reporter Bobby Lewis at The Swamp in Gainesville to talk about being from Tampa, his favorite football memory and what his head coach is really like.
