(USA TODAY) The Ford Escape is living up to its name when it comes to popularity with thieves, a new study says.
The Ford Escape was the most stolen SUV, leading two other Fords in the top three: the Edge and the Explorer, the National Insurance Crime Bureau reports. The study looked at thefts of 2011 to 2013 model-year SUVs and crossovers from 2010 to 2013. During that time, the Escape escaped from its owners in 1,421 cases.
After the three Fords, next comes the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Kia Sorento. After that is Chevrolet Traverse, Nissan Rogue, Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4 and Chevrolet Equinox.
Compact SUVs were stolen twice as often as full-size SUVs, the study finds.
The most popular state for SUV thefts was California, followed by Florida, Michigan, Texas and New York.
