A crowdfunding project devoted to making a potato salad closed its campaign with more than $55,000.
The potato salad campaign, launched last month on Kickstarter, closed three days ago with $55,492 and more than 6,900 backers.
The Kickstarter was created by Zack Brown with a simple goal: to make a potato salad. It started with a goal of $10, but morphed into a viral sensation attracting hundreds of backers.
Brown's project isn't the first creative -- and unusual -- use of Kickstarter. A project launched earlier this year sought $8 for a creative presentation explaining the "deliciousness" of a chicken burrito from Chipotle. The campaign netted more than $1,000.
Kickstarter says the potato salad campaign was the fourth most-viewed project page in the site's history, behind campaigns for the Ouya video game console, the Pebble smartwatch and the Veronica Mars movie. The site says backers pledged an average of $8.03 to the campaign.
