(USA TODAY) Amazon is reportedly close to acquiring the video game streaming service Twitch, which had been rumored as a potential target for tech giant Google.

According to The Information and Wall Street Journal, Amazon is close to scooping up Twitch for more than $1 billion. Details of the deal could be confirmed officially as soon as Monday.

Amazon and Twitch could not be immediately reached for comment.

The video service that allows players to stream their video game exploits has been the subject of acquisition rumors for several months. In July, Venturebeat reported Google was planning to acquire Twitch for $1 billion. YouTube has also been reported as a potential Twitch suitor.

Twitch has surged in popularity with the launch of Sony's PlayStation 4 and Microsoft's Xbox One last November, as well as the rise in competitve e-sports. As of last month, Twitch says more than 50 million people broadcast or watch content on their site.
