BROOKSVILLE, Fla. - Officials with the Hernando County Sheriff's Office said 31 sinkholes have opened up around the county because of heavy rainfall Sunday from Tropical Storm Debby.
In the Trillium neighborhood, officials said more than a dozen formed, mostly behind homes along Nodding Shade Drive. Some of the holes opened up just feet away from houses. Other residents said they are worried things may get worse.
Sinkholes have also shut down roadways in the county. Mariner Blvd. from Little St. to Claymore is closed off after two holes opened up in the roadway. Also, Quality Dr. from Spring Hill Regional Hospital to Suncoast Elementary School is closed off.
Officials said crews are working hard to get those areas back open again.
