It was as powerful as a hurricane, but happened in March: the no-name "Storm of the Century" that ripped across Florida on March 12, 1993. At its height, the storm stretched from Canada towards Central America.
Intense wind shear caused at least 11 tornadoes over Florida. F0 twisters touched down in Pasco , Polk Pinellas, and Hillsborough counties, while killer F2's moved over north central Florida. The F2 tornado near Chiefland in Levy County led to three fatalities. Other tornado fatalities were reported in Alachua and Lake counties.
Persistent intense winds from the south drove hurricane-size storm surge into Tampa Bay and along the Nature Coast, water rose as high as 12 feet in Taylor County. The surge drowned 13 people.
A squall line produced a derecho as it moved into Tampa Bay with winds over 90 mph. This pushed boats into yards in Hudson and resulted in severe beach erosion.
