New Orleans, LA -- Four years ago today, a Category 3 hurricane hit the Gulf Coast and, following a catastrophic levee failure, flooded about 80 percent of New Orleans.
This morning, hundreds of people attended a bell ringing service and the unveiling of a plaque at the Katrina Memorial on Canal Street.
During the 2005 storm, more than 1,800 people died, and another one million people were displaced from their homes along the Gulf Coast from Florida to Texas.
Hurricane Katrina ranks as one of the nation's five deadliest hurricanes.
