TAMPA, Fla. - The winter season is officially here.
The winter solstice happens at 11:28 a.m. ET Thursday. It marks the exact moment when the Northern Hemisphere is tilted at its furthest point away from the sun.
It also marks the shortest day of the year. Tampa will see 10 hours, 22 minutes and 17 seconds of daylight Thursday, which is two seconds shorter than Wednesday.
The word "solstice" is Latin for "sun standing still."
