Dade City man walks off plane, into handcuffs for alleged child sex crimes

He flew back from Puerto Rico and handcuffs were waiting for him.

TAMPA, Fla. - Following a trip to Puerto Rico, Phillips Edgardo Mendez stepped off a plane at Tampa International Airport and into handcuffs from Dade City police.

Mendez, 49, of Wilson Street in Dade City, faces 11 counts of capital felony sexual battery and three counts of lewd and lascivious molestation.

Mendez is accused of sexually assaulting two children, both under the age of 12, over a three year period, authorities said.

Detectives were contacted Feb. 18 after the older child, now 10, told their mother about the assaults.

Mendez remained at the Hillsborough County jail under a $700,000 bond.
