Driver crashes car into bedroom of St. Petersburg home while fleeing traffic stop

Images from 10News' crew at the scene show an Acura sedan had crashed into the side of the home and some of its fencing.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- It wasn't an expected wake-up call: a car crashed into the bedroom of a house in St. Petersburg's Harris Park neighborhood.

The crash happened around 2:30 a.m. Thursday, March 1, on 10th Street at 53rd Avenue North.

Images from 10News' crew at the scene showed an Acura sedan had plowed into the side of the home and into some of its fencing. Police at the scene are working an investigation and a towing company worked to remove the vehicle.

Police say the driver, identified as 27-year-old Michael Amons, fled a traffic stop at 53th Avenue North before he crashed into the home's bedroom.

A couple sleeping inside recalled the weight of debris being on top of them, but they were not badly hurt. No streets in the neighborhood were blocked to traffic.

Amons is charged with reckless driving and several drug-related crimes, including trafficking in cocaine, trafficking in MDMA, possession of hydromorphone, possession of marijuana.
