TAMPA, Fla. - Kellie Etling gently provided orders on the curb in front of the iconic Tampa Theatre. The University of Tampa student knew exactly what to do to make this production look perfect.

“If you’re inspired and passionate, it’s going to come out good because you’re excited about it,” she said.

Etling was counseling three young film enthusiasts who were taking part in the Tampa Theatre Summer Film Camp. It’s an annual camp open to kids from third grade to twelfth grade who are interested in learning what it takes to create eye-catching films for the big screen.

“I did it last year and I had a lot of fun,” said one camper named Zoe. “Last year we did a horror movie and it’s like a really good atmosphere. So, we went upstairs and filmed all our stuff.”

The week-long camp is broken into two half-day sessions. The morning camp is for younger campers. The afternoon camp is for older kids. The students meet as strangers on Monday and learn the art of writing, shooting, acting and producing movies. They will create a 3-5 minute film during the week in small groups and view them at a movie premiere to wrap up the week on Friday.

“You would be amazed. You really would be,” said Camp Director Nate Wolkenhauer. “I’m amazed, every week.”

Etling was inspired to go to film school after attending the camp as a child.

“I found my passion here,” she said. “So, it’s really cool to come back and maybe help somebody else find their passion.”

The Tampa Theatre offers five sessions for the camp during the summer. There are two remaining during the weeks of July 16-20 and 23-27. Spots are available for each week. The cost is $190 per camper.
