A proposal to limit how many consecutive years elected school board members can serve is one step closer to appearing on the November ballot.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Soon, elected members of Florida's school board may only be able to serve in that role for 8 consecutive years.

State House lawmakers approved that measure in a 79-39 vote along party lines Thursday. It still needs to pass in the Senate.

Because this measure would be a referendum to current rules for Florida school board members, the governor does not have to give his approval for it to appear as a question on the November ballot. It would then need to be approved by at least 60 percent of voters to become law.

The measure would bring school boards in line with most statewide elected officials like the governor and members of the state Legislature.

But opponents argue the ability to limit how many terms an incumbent serves already exists simply by people voting each year.
