What began as a hobby for St. Joseph's Women's Hospital Labor and Delivery Nurse Paula MacDonald quickly evolved into a unit-wide passion. MacDonald's goal was to create a handmade hat—either knitted or crocheted—for each newborn. Even though she passed away last year, MacDonald's colleagues have carried on the mission in her honor, which is now called Paula's Project. The team creates themed hats for special occasions and holidays (such as the Super Bowl (footballs), Easter (bunny ears), Thanksgiving (turkeys) and Christmas (trees and snowmen)), all on their breaks or at home. They hope to one day meet MacDonald's goal of providing a handmade hat for each baby born at St. Joseph's Women's Hospital.
