10News helps homeless youth

"We're so thankful. This $5,000 will help save more kids."

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.--10News on Thursday presented the group Starting Right, Now with a $5,000 grant from 10News and the TEGNA Foundation.

Starting Right, Now provides housing and mentors to homeless students in Pinellas and Hillsborough Counties.

Starting Right’s Founder, Vicki Sokolik, says the group is helping break the cycle of poverty. Some of the students who’ve gone through their program now have steady jobs and families of their own.

Others are in college, including medical school. These previously homeless youth are often top students.

“We’re so thankful. This $5,000 will help save more kids,” said Sokolik.

Starting Right, Now is now looking to expand beyond the Tampa Bay area.
