St. Petersburg, Fl – Here’s a great way to burn off some of those Thanksgiving calories or start a new family tradition. The YMCA Goody Goody Turkey Gobble run is Thanksgiving morning.

The 5K and one mile walk/run begin and end at Amalie Arena and the route runs along scenic Bayshore Boulevard. “Bayshore is closed to traffic; we have Bayshore to ourselves all the way to Willow, make a U-turn, come back and go up to the plaza and enjoy a Goody Goody breakfast,” explains race director Sandi Lake.

The race is a lot of fun, because people dress up as pilgrims and turkeys. “We encourage them to dress up; it’s very family-oriented just like the YMCA,” says Lake.

Race proceeds go to support the LIVESTRONG program at the YMCA for cancer survivors and their families. The 12-week program, which encourages physical and social activities, is free of charge to families.

Janna Roome, a breast cancer survivor, says LIVESTRONG is much more than an exercise program. “I benefited from the community aspect of it. I moved away from my support network and I needed to create a new one,” she explained. “Having the community at the Y helped me immensely mentally to continue my battle.”

To encourage family involvement, The Turkey Gobbler is both stroller and dog friendly. There will be separate start areas for safety. Lake says, “We want you to have a great start to your Thanksgiving.”
