It’s a full moon tonight.
April’s full moon is known as the full “Pink Moon”.
No, it won’t actually look pink. It’s named after the herb moss pink, or wild ground phlox, which is one of the earliest widespread flowers of the spring.
You may notice the moon looks a little bigger and brighter than normal. That’s because it’s a super moon.
A super moon is a full moon that nearly coincides with perigee—the closest that the Moon comes to the Earth in its elliptic orbit—resulting in a slightly larger-than-usual size.
The moon on Tuesday night is about about 221,772 miles away from Earth, the closest it will be all year.
This pink super moon will appear 7 percent larger than an average full moon.
Tuesday night’s moon will rise at 7:37 p.m. and will set Wednesday morning at 7:47 a.m. That means the beautiful full moon will be lighting up our sky all night long.
Normally, each year has 12 full moons. But in 2020, October will have two full moons, one on Oct. 1 and then again on Oct. 31. Two full moons in the same month is known as a "blue moon." And the fact that the second one falls on Halloween truly makes this event "once in a blue moon."
