Dozens of dogs and cats are being removed from a shelter in Brooksville, and volunteers are issuing an urgent call for supplies to take care of them.

The animals were living at 4320 Neff Lake Road, which is registered to Furperson Retreat Inc.

The dogs and cats mostly appear to be in good condition, but the county says the shelter owner has become overwhelmed by the number of animals. The owner will be allowed to keep some of the dogs and cats.

Volunteers from the Florida State Animal Response Coalition are helping to care for the animals, which will be examined for possible adoption.

Hernando County Animal Services is asking for the following donations:

  • Towels
  • Brown cardboard paper
  • Dog shampoo

These items can be brought to Hernando County Animal Services, 19450 Oliver St. in Brooksville or call (352) 796-5062.
