TAMPA, Fla. — The Florida Aquarium is asking for the public's help in naming its new loggerhead sea turtle.
The juvenile male loggerhead is unable to return to the wild because of an injury. He was rescued from the frigid waters off the northeast coast of the United States, where he was found "cold-stunned."
Now, Loggerhead Sea Turtle #263 needs a formal name to make permanent his home in the aquarium's Heart of the Sea exhibit.
The vote on a name and see more photos of the sea turtle, just visit "Choose My Name" on the aquarium's website. All of the names below were contributed by elementary school students in Hillsborough County.
The class who suggested the winning name will get a field trip to the aquarium to meet the loggerhead.
Here are the names to choose from:
- Kekoa (which means ‘the warrior’ in Hawaiian)
- Shelldon
- Suds
- Leonardo
- Auggie
- Lenny
- Colson
- Winston
Floridians can vote for a name once a day. The aquarium is also giving away a four-pack of tickets to a random winner who voted that day.
Voting ends March 31 and the sea turtle's new name will be announced the following week.
