TAMPA, Fla. — Cuteness alert: ZooTampa just shared the first look at its newest bundle of joy.
ZooTampa at Lowry Park announced the arrival of an African penguin chick on March 25. The baby born to parents Thumbelina and Rocky weighed 61 grams.
The zoo said these penguins are native to the coastlines of South Africa and Namibia and are one of the five warm-weather penguin species. These penguins are considered endangered in the wild due to food shortages from commercial fishing, oil spills and fishing nets.
ZooTampa currently has a colony of 19 African penguins.
