Local dad helps daughters understand their sister's chemo in creative way

It's a video that will capture your hearts this Father's Day.

TAMPA, Fla. -- It's a video that will capture your hearts this Father’s Day.

It shows 4-year-old Ellie, her sisters and dad counting down the days until her last chemo. Cancer hasn't been easy for the family to accept, especially for Ellie’s sisters.

So father Mike York thought of a creative way to help them understand what their sister was going through.

The girls created a chain-link paper bracelet with pictures to give them a visual reminder of how many days were left in Ellie’s treatment.

The last few days, York documented the girls' excitement and the final chemo and steroids for Ellie --making almost 800 days of treatment a little brighter.

“From the beginning, it seemed so far away like it was never going to happen. So, finally by the end we gave her the last treatment and we threw the bottle away and that was that,” said Mike York.

Ellie isn't in the clear, she's still on medication to control various systems.

“Once a month, she will get blood work to make sure the leukemia has not returned for a year,” said York.

This family said the will continue to create projects to share on their blog that helps other families dealing with the same issues.

All cancer is different, Ellie was given chemo medication she could take at home.

The York family has also found comfort with her Leukemia through various programs at 1 Voice Foundation, which help families dealing with pediatric cancer. If you would like more information, click here.
