Here's how to lose weight and win some cash all in time for the holidays

Trying to stay healthy over the holidays? This could help.

Losing weight over the holidays is a challenge for even the most disciplined person, but put a little cash on the line and you have instant motivation.

Especially with all the holiday spending many of us will be doing, it would be great to earn a little extra cash and get healthy at the same time.

There's an app for that: it's called HealthyWage. It's been around for a few years and is increasingly gaining popularity.

Here's how it works:

You put in your goals and bet a certain amount of money per month over a six to 18 month period. If you meet that goal you win, but if you don't meet the goal, the money you bet becomes prize money for others people. You can win up to $10,000.

David Roddenberry is a co-founder of the app.

"We have over 850,000 customers and we've paid out over $20 million to winners. So we're really excited to give everyone the opportunity to use money as a motivator," Roddenberry said.

Champaigne Spivey lives in Tampa and decided to give the app a try back in April. She lost 25 pounds in just under six months and bet $240 of her own money.

"When I met my goal, I sent my video in almost immediately because I was so excited and I ended up making a profit of at least $400 and it took them less than a week to get the money to me," Spivey said.

Spivey said she tried losing weight before and knew exactly how to do it, but having money on the line made all the difference.

There are a few other apps that are similar, Dietbet, Stickk and Achievement, but HealthyWage claims it's unique because it's personalized to you and your options.

As an extra motivation to get healthy over the holidays, if you sign up for a challenge by the end of this month, HealthyWage will throw in a $100 on top of any prize money if you meet your goal.
