BELLINGHAM, Wash. — A Washington camp counselor has expressed his sadness and frustration after claiming he was fired from his job as a Christian camp counselor because he's gay.
Jace Taylor says the camp leaders turned their backs on him after he gathered the courage to be honest about his sexuality, KCPQ reports.
While his family members gave their full support last year when he came out, Taylor claims the Fircreek Day Camp in Bellingham, Washington, terminated him.
"I was terminated based on my sexual orientation which was found out over social media," Taylor told KCPQ.
Working at the camp was a passion for him -- not just a summer job, CBS affiliate KIRO reports. He grew up going there. And, KIRO says the camp staff members were like a second family to him.
According to KIRO, the camp's website makes clear that staff members must follow its doctrinal statement, which includes traditional views about sexuality.
"To be consistent to our mission and doctrinal statement, we unfortunately had to withdraw our invitation to this young man, who we truly like, for this summer staff role," the camp's executive director told KIRO in a statement. "We sincerely wish this was otherwise."
Taylor told KIRO he does not plan to sue, but he does plan to picket the first day of camp on June 24. He has received several job offers elsewhere.
