Free catalytic converter theft prevention program offered in Tampa Bay area

The program will be available at two locations, one in Tampa and the other in Clearwater while supplies last.

TAMPA, Fla. — The American Automobile Association (AAA) announced Thursday it will offer a free catalytic converter theft prevention program in the Tampa Bay area at two locations, according to a news release.

The program will be available at 1701 N Westshore Blvd. Tampa, FL 33607 and 2347 Gulf to Bay Blvd, Clearwater, FL 33765 while supplies last, the news release explained.

AAA says those interested do not have to be AAA members, but it's best to call in advance to make an appointment for either of the above locations.

Catalytic converter theft is a growing national problem and in the Tampa Bay area the number of thefts skyrocketed by 1,215% in 2021 compared to 2019, AAA said.

Per AAA, the number of reported cases in Hillsborough County increased by 50% from 2021 to 2022, according to the sheriff's office.

Drivers will know when the catalytic converter is missing because their vehicle will make a loud, roaring sound. AAA says the 'check engine' light may also come on and the driver may notice the vehicle does not drive as smoothly.

AAA gave these tips on how to protect yourself from catalytic converter theft:

  • Visit one of two Tampa Bay Car Care Facilities to have your vehicle’s catalytic converter registered with a national crime prevention database, which is accessible by authorities and recyclers.
  • Consider installing an anti-theft device over your catalytic converter, like a shield, cage or steel cables.
  • Park in a garage or well-lit public area. Consider a spot that would make it difficult for thieves to get underneath your car.
  • Review your auto insurance policy. See if you have comprehensive coverage. This provides protection from damage caused by an incident other than a crash, including theft.
