A.O. Smith has received six reports of fires from the water heaters being installed on a flammable surface.

Several different brands of water heaters, sold primarily in California, are being recalled because of a potential fire hazard.

Roughly 616,000 residential 30, 40 and 50-gallon natural or propane gas-fired Ultra-Low NOx water heaters are being recalled because their gas burner screens can rip and create excess radiant heat -- which can spark fires if they are installed on wood or other types of flammable flooring, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

Milwaukee-based manufacturer A.O. Smith has received six reports of fires from the water heaters being installed on flammable surfaces. No injuries have been reported.

The water heaters were sold under the brand names American Water Heater, A.O. Smith, Kenmore, Reliance, State, U.S. Craftsmaster and Whirlpool. They were manufactured between April 8, 2011, and Aug. 1, 2016.

The brand name, model numbers and serial numbers can be found on the data plates of each product located next to their gas control valves.

Consumers should go to www.waterheaterrecall.com, input their model and serial numbers and complete the form to determine if their water heaters are subject to this recall.

Those affected by the recall who own Whirlpool, U.S. Craftmaster or American brand water heaters can call 866-854-2793.

Consumers with Reliance, State, A. O. Smith, and Kenmore brand water heaters can call 866-880-4661.
