Cab driver arrested, charged in last week's fatal hit-and-run in St. Petersburg

Police said the man was transported to the hospital with critical injuries. He later died.

Update on July 6, 2018: ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – St. Petersburg police have arrested the cab driver they say is responsible for a deadly hit-and-run crash last week.

United Cab driver Jimarez Donshay Reed is accused of hitting and killing Plinnie McNelly, 58, on June 29 in the 3600 block of 34th Street North.

Investigators say McNelly was trying to cross 34th Street North but fell and was sitting in the road when Reed's taxi hit him. McNelly died at an area hospital.

Surveillance video and a witness tip helped detectives find Reed, who was arrested Thursday.

Reed, 26, is charged with leaving the scene of a deadly accident. He also had five outstanding warrants from Hillsborough County, according to the police.

Original Story on June 29, 2018: ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – A man died after a hit-and-run crash early Friday morning, St. Petersburg police said.

An ambulance was driving on US 19 when they spotted a man on the ground 3600 block of 34th Street North.

St. Petersburg police said 58-year-old Plinnie A. McNelly was transported to the hospital with critical injuries. He later died.

Around 6:15 a.m. Friday, police reopened US 19 between 35th Avenue and 38th Avenue. The stretch of US 19 was closed for about four hours.

Anyone with information about the vehicle involved in the crash is asked to call police at 727-893-7780.
