TAMPA, Fla. — A 17-year-old boy accused of hitting his sister and throwing his mother to the ground was shot by a deputy, the sheriff's office said.
Dispatchers received two calls about people who were hurt just after 7:40 p.m. Tuesday at Jasmine Terrace Apartments, Sheriff Chad Chronister said. They were told someone was bleeding, while another caller stated a person was bleeding and passed out.
The sheriff's office said a family argument began in the parking lot and the teen hit his sister. Then, the suspect threw his mother to the ground resulting in a minor head injury, deputies say.
One of the responding deputies, Daniel Estanislau, saw the suspect walking away from the apartment. The sheriff's office said Estanislau feared for his safety because he believed the teen was carrying a weapon.
Chronister said the deputy ordered the teen to "drop the gun" then fired two rounds, hitting the teen once in the upper body. The sheriff's office said no weapon was found at the scene.
Chronister said the suspect was taken to a hospital with critical injuries. The sheriff's office said the teen is in stable condition.
The sheriff's office said the teen has a criminal history but because of his age, cannot reveal any details.
Estanislau, 26, has been on the force since October 2015 and had one prior disciplinary action against him; a traffic crash in April 2017.
The sheriff's office said Estanislau has been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure. State Attorney Andrew Warren's office is investigating.
