WEEKI WACHEE, Fla. — A man riding a VIP scooter was caught carrying methamphetamine, the Hernando County Sheriff's Office said.
Late Friday night, a deputy on patrol saw the scooter in the area of Nightwalker Road and Day Owl Avenue. Investigators say the deputy knew the driver, James Hunt, 50, and knew he didn't have a valid driver's license.
The deputy pulled the scooter over, and the driver was initially cooperative, but then he tried to run away, the sheriff's office said. Authorities say after a short struggle, the deputy apprehended Hunt.
According to law enforcement, inside Hunt's backpack, deputies found a clear plastic container filled with a 31.08 grams of crystal-like substance that tested positive for meth.
There was also a scale with meth residue and several small baggies in the backpack, deputies said.
Hunt was carrying $905, according to deputies.
He was charged with trafficking in methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia, driving while license is suspended or revoked and resisting without violence. His bail is set at $53,000.
