Man involved in 'absolute gun battle' with deputies dies, sheriff's office says

Sheriff Chris Nocco said the 62-year-old suspect tried to kill everybody who responded to the home.

NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. — A man accused of shooting a Pasco County Sheriff's Office deputy in the leg has died from the wounds he suffered during the gun battle with law enforcement.

Terrance Peterson, 62, had been accused of shooting 41-year-old K-9 Deputy Chris Stone early Saturday morning after a domestic dispute. Authorities were originally dispatched to the home after investigators claim Peterson got into an argument with his wife and shot at her Amazon Alexa device.

It happened at a home in the area of Humboldt Avenue and Seven Spring Boulevard in New Port Richey. When deputies arrived, they say Peterson opened fire and a gun battle ensued.

"Make no mistake about it: This suspect tried to kill everybody that was outside the house. All those deputies," Sheriff Chris Nocco said.

With the help of a robot, deputies finally made their way into the house and found Peterson with a gunshot wound to the head. He was taken to the hospital.

On Wednesday, the Pasco County Sheriff's Office announced he had died of his injuries. Deputy Stone was still recovering at the hospital as of Wednesday morning. Stone has been with the sheriff's office since July 2017.
