Pasco County sheriff's deputies said they fatally shot a man who was coming at them Thursday night.
According to a report, deputies were called at 7:47 p.m. to a home in the 38000 block of Higginson Road in Zephyrhills in reference to a domestic disturbance. The caller said Stephen Steele, 56, was becoming violent with his girlfriend.
The caller said Steele was armed and said he was going to kill "four or five" deputies.
Upon the deputies' arrival, Steele fled to a camper behind the house.
Deputies said Steele was threatening to commit suicide with a knife. He cut his wrists and made slashing motions at his throat, deputies said. He then opened the door and asked the deputies to come in.
Deputies said they tried to de-escalate the situation, but as they were trying to determine a plan of action, Steele charged at deputies with the knife, so one fired their gun at him.
He was taken to an area hospital, but he died on the way there.
Sheriff's Col. Jeffrey Harrington said the deputy's action "saved others from harm."
Harrington said the investigation is ongoing with Major Crimes and the State Attorney's Office.
