A 26-year-old Tampa man is accused of abusing a 3-month-old girl, putting her in critical condition, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said.

Deputies said Demarcus Lamar Johnson has been charged with felony aggravated child abuse.

According to a report, deputies were called about 6:45 a.m. Friday by Brandon Regional Hospital about the girl, who was suffering from a head injury. Hospital staff determined the girl had multiple skull fractures and swelling on the brain.

She was flown to All-Children's Hospital in St. Petersburg, where she underwent emergency surgery.

Johnson was caring for the child while her mother was working overnight. When the mother returned home at 4 a.m., she discovered the child's injuries.

Johnson is the mother's live-in boyfriend but not the girl's mother, deputies said.

Johnson was arrested about 9:45 p.m.

The investigation is continuing.
