Experts say weather behind love bug decline

Experts say cold weather is the likely reason Floridians are seeing fewer lovebugs this year.
They're back! Love Bugs, which seem to swarm along highways mid-day during May and October are starting to make their May appearance in Brevard County.

OCALA — Experts say cold weather is the likely reason Floridians are seeing fewer lovebugs this year.

University of Florida Professor Norman Leppla told the Palm Beach Post on Sunday that unusually cold and wet weather this spring made it difficult for larva to survive.

He says the bugs spend most of their lives as larva beneath decaying vegetation and need ideal conditions to thrive.

The bugs travel and pairs and normally inundate the state during the month of May.
