Gov. Scott to announce plan to keep Florida students safe

The announcement, which follows roundtable discussions Scott had this week, includes "major changes."
Florida Gov. Rick Scott (blue shirt) addresses the media on Feb. 15, 2018, one day after a mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - School safety improvements and "keeping guns away from individuals struggling with mental illness" are among "major changes" Gov. Rick Scott will announce Friday morning as part of his plan to keep Florida students safe.

The announcement follows roundtable discussions Scott had Wednesday with law enforcement, school administrators, teachers, mental health experts and students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, where 17 students and staff were killed last week in an on-campus shooting.

Scott said everything is "on the table" following the discussions, including banning assault weapons.

Florida House members voted down a motion to take up a bill that would ban assault rifles, effectively killing the measure for this legislative session.

Scott is expected to make his remarks at 10:30 a.m. from Tallahassee.

They will be streamed live on wtsp.com and on our Facebook page.
