ORLANDO, Fla — Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis spoke about the state's coronavirus response Tuesday afternoon at Orlando Health.

On Tuesday, the Florida Department of Health reported another 3,289 new cases of COVID-19 in the state. That number is the fifth time in a week new cases have topped 3,000.

Saturday's report of 4,049 new cases is the highest single-day record since tracking began in the state.

The new cases come after the state on Monday surpassed the 100,000 cases mark. Monday was also the first time in four days the number of new cases had been fewer than 3,000. Now, it's back above that mark.

Florida has been battling a new outbreak since Phase Two of reopening began on June 5. One study has even said the state could become the next epicenter of the coronavirus pandemic.

State leaders, including DeSantis, have pointed to an increase in testing for the jumps in new cases since the beginning of the month. During a news conference on Saturday, DeSantis also laid blame on the state's younger population, something he began highlighting in recent days.

He noted the median age of people testing positive fell into the mid to upper 30s, down from the senior-aged population at the beginning of the pandemic.

Although officials are finding more younger people are testing positive, DeSantis said it doesn't yet crunch the hospital system as it had with older people, and the state's hospital system is able to handle an increased caseload.

"The state is really in a good spot to handle these eventualities," DeSantis said.

While announcing no new changes to the state's Phase Two reopening plan, DeSantis further encouraged people to follow CDC guidelines like social distancing, frequent hand washing and sanitation and wearing a mask when distancing isn't possible.

During Tuesday's press conference, DeSantis highlighted the recent suspension of one Orlando bar's liquor license, after 13 employees and 28 customers tested positive for COVID-19.

He applauded Secretary Halsey Beshears' response to the bar's "flagrant violation" of the state's reopening guidelines. DeSantis and Beshears said warnings would be given out if restaurants or pubs were going slightly above the 50-percent capacity mandate.

However, if restaurants, bars or pubs turned into "Dance Party USA" and went seriously beyond the guidelines, DeSantis said Secretary Beshears would be the "grim reaper of business licenses."

Still, DeSantis emphasized that most businesses and restaurants have been doing very well adhering to reopening guidelines.
