A Highlands County Sheriff's deputy was arrested overnight for DUI.
Deputy James West was found stopped in the middle of the road "slumped over the steering wheel" on State Road 66 on the evening of April 14.
Sergeant Ahrens found him passed out in his truck with the truck running. He got West's attention after many attempts and determined that West was under the extreme influence of alcohol.
Another deputy was called to help as it was determined that Field Sobriety Tests needed to be administered. After the tests, it was determined that West was under the influence and his normal facilities were impaired.
West refused to submit to a breath test.
The sheriff's office says Deputy James West has been placed on administrative leave with pay while an Internal Affairs investigation is conducted.
