Lakeland commissioners vote to remove Confederate monument from park

The 35-foot monument in Munn Park had been the center of a lot of debate.
The Confederate statue in Lakeland's Munn Park has stood there for more than a century.

LAKELAND, Fla. -- A Confederate monument that’s been the center of debate in Polk County is going to be moved.

That’s the decision of Lakeland Commissioners, who voted 4-3 to have the monument relocated from Munn Park. It came after hours of public comment.

At this point, it’s not clear to where the 35-foot monument will be moved or when.

Some of the possible locations include Veterans Memorial Park or Frances Langford Promenade at Lake. It also might move to an interior location, such as city hall.
