Bank evacuated after former employee leaves 'suspicious substance' on envelope, police say

One worker suffered minor burns.

CLEARWATER, Fla. — Clearwater police and fire rescue crews are at Centennial Bank on U.S. 19 after reports of a possible hazmat situation.

Police say they received a call around 2:07 p.m. after an employee noticed a former employee left a "suspicious substance" on an envelope. The nine employees in the bank were evacuated as a precaution.

One worker suffered minor burns to a finger after opening the package, according to Clearwater fire officials. He was taken to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg for treatment and released.

Members of the Pinellas County Hazmat team entered the bank and got the package. It will be turned over to the FBI, which will investigate the incident.
