LAKE WALES, Fla. — Polk County deputies responded to a deadly bike crash Tuesday morning involving two vehicles on North Galloway Road.

The crash happened around 5:23 a.m. when the bicyclist was riding on the far right side of the northbound lane near Apollo Court.

Deputies said the man was hit and thrown from his bike, rolling across the hood of the car. The man then fell into the southbound lane of Galloway Road where he was hit by another vehicle, deputies said.

The bicyclist, later identified as Mitchell Johnson, was sent to Lakeland Regional Hospital after suffering head trauma from the crash. He died shortly after arriving.

Neither driver showed signs of impairment, and speed and driver distraction do not appear to be factors in the crash, deputies say.

Deputies say the area of the road where the crash happened has no street lighting and the bicyclist was wearing dark clothing with no lighting on his bike.

North Galloway Road was closed for around four hours and the crash is still under investigation.
