A Lakewood Ranch family who has gone through a devastating loss is dealing with another blow.

Nick Wilson's family placed a white bicycle, a "ghost bike" at the spot where the 34-year-old man was killed last month.

He was training for a triathlon when he was struck by an SUV on Lorraine Road near 59th Avenue East.

About a week after placing the bike, however, Wilson's mother went to the memorial and found it was destroyed.

The family doesn't know if it was vandalism or a mistake, but they are devastated.

"It was completely demolished," said his wife Kristina Wilson. "No handlebars, the wheels were ruined, and it's just kind of heartbreaking to see something that was ... part of you and what you've gone through to be trashed."

They have placed a new memorial across the street.
