CLEARWATER, Fla. — Clearwater police are cracking down on speeding motorcycle drivers, and they have brand-new video to prove it.

Pinellas deputies acted as the eyes in the sky in the latest operation Friday night. From their sheriff’s office helicopter, deputies directed police on the ground toward the reckless bikers.

“He's running west,” a deputy in the helicopter can be heard saying over the radio in newly released video. “He took off his helmet.”

The man police were after was one of four bikers busted by Clearwater Police in a weekend crackdown. When the driver stopped, police said they turned on their lights and surrounded the driver. Then, the biker can be seen trying to take off but slamming into a police cruiser.

The biker took off on foot and police eventually caught him. Three of the bikers arrested over the weekend were going more than 120 mph, according to police.

“The sad part is they don't slow down because there's no law enforcement around, which is just stunning,” said Sgt. Christian Zarra, whose car was hit by the biker.

Police won't chase bikers going that fast. It's too dangerous for everyone else on the road, so they need the spotters in the air. Police wait for word from above that the bikers have stopped, then move in.

Police know that the bridges are a hotspot for reckless driving and racing. Clearwater police are working with FDOT and other agencies to cut off access points on not only the Courtney Campbell Causeway, but the other bridges as well, so racers can't congregate there.
