Bradenton mom warning others after she and her son drifted into the gulf on inflatable swan

When they say they noticed calm water and no wind, the mom didn't think anything of floating on the swan with her son in the water.

ANNA MARIA ISLAND, Fla. -- A Bradenton mom is hoping others learn from a scary incident that happened to her and her son.

Tara Myers and her 7-year-old son decided to take their large inflatable swan float out to the beach on Anna Maria Island last month. When they say they noticed calm water and no wind, Myers didn't think anything of floating on the swan with her son in the water.

She says it was a great beach day and the two were having a good time talking - until they started drifting far from the shore into the gulf.

Myers says she and her son tried to paddle back towards the shore, but to no avail.

"I didn't gain an inch, I just felt like the current just kept pushing us further out," Myers said. "I couldn't have done any more and gotten us back to shore by myself."

Witnesses saw the large swan floating away and called for help.

A Manatee County marine rescue boat responded and brought Myers and her son back to the shore.
