BROOKSVILLE, Fla. — An elderly woman in Brooksville was airlifted after suffering from severe dog bites to both of her legs, deputies say.
Hernando County deputies responded just after 7:30 a.m. Monday on Church Road. A person saw the 70-year-old woman and stopped to give her basic first aid before calling deputies.
The caller told deputies the woman said she had been walking as she normally did when the dogs attacked her. The caller described the three dogs as pit bulls and said the animals were still on the loose after attacking the woman.
The woman was airlifted to the hospital due to the severity of her injuries, deputies say. She remains hospitalized at a local trauma center as of Tuesday afternoon.
When animal enforcement and deputies tried to find the dogs, one of the dogs tried to attack, according to deputies. Deputies used bag round to subdue the dogs. They were taken to Hernando County Animal Services.
The owner was contacted and cited for $900 for three counts of Public Nuisance Animal for a second offense and $1,200 for three counts of unrestrained animals. He surrendered the dogs to be euthanized, deputies say, since he said they were too aggressive.
Deputies say all three dogs are licensed and current on shots. The owner of the dog had been previously cited on Jan. 30 for not vaccinating his dog, having an unlicensed animal and public nuisance animal for the same three dogs after they showed aggression towards another person. He was fined $1,500.
The three dogs are currently being housed at the Hernando County Animal Services facility in Brooksville.
