Fee to replace license to become organ donor waived in honor of fallen Highlands deputy

Deputy William Gentry's organs saved multiple lives. Now, Florida is waiving a driver's license fee to help others save even more lives.

SEBRING, Fla. -- The state of Florida has made it easier to become an organ donor to honor a Highlands County deputy who was killed in the line of duty.

The $31.25 fee to change your Florida license from a non-organ donor to an organ donor will be waived statewide, Highlands County Tax Collector Eric Zwayer said.

It is still up to each county to waive the $6.25 tax collector fee, Zwayer said, but the entire fee will be waived in Highlands County as a continuing memorial to Deputy William Gentry whose organs saved five lives.

Gentry was shot in the head on May 6 and died the next day.

Zwayer said he got the approval earlier this week from the Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles.

Anyone who would like to become an organ donor can go to one of the three Highlands County Tax Collector branches during normal business hours.
- The Sebring Main Office at 540 S. Commerce Avenue
- The Avon Park Branch Office at 116 E. Main St. (next to City Hall)
- The Lake Placid Branch Office at 11 N. Pine Ave.

You must have your current driver license and only be changing the organ donor designation for the fee to be waived. For more information, contact the Highlands County Tax Collector’s Office at 863-402-6685.
