SUN CITY CENTER, Fla. - A Hillsborough County firefighter was airlifted to a trauma center after falling off a fire truck and injuring his head Tuesday afternoon.

It happened at Sun City Center Fire Station 28 on Sun City Boulevard at about 5:28 p.m.

The firefighter was leaving the station in response to a call when he was injured, officials said.

"As far as we know there was no criminal activity involved in this," Hillsborough County Fire Rescue spokesperson Eric Seidel said. "This was strictly an accident."

Who the firefighter is or how it happened hasn’t been released but we’re told he was inside the truck.

Investigators spent the afternoon looking at the door latch and the seatbelt on the passenger side of Engine 28.

“He took an airborne shot it appeared on his shoulder," said witness John Sauber. "He flew into it right. I hope he’s okay. That was very whoa.”

While his injuries were described as serious, we’re told the firefighter will survive.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office is also conducting their own traffic investigation.
