Florida diver on standby for Thailand cave rescue

International Underwater Cave Rescue and Recovery Coordinator Edd Sorenson has been a cave diver for more than a decade.

MARIANNA, Fla. - A technical cave diver from Florida is on standby to possibly help with the Thailand cave rescue.

The Thai government invited International Underwater Cave Rescue and Recovery Coordinator Edd Sorenson to help with the operation if necessary.

Sorenson has talked with the media many times about the challenges rescuers face removing the 12 boys and their coach.

"Stress is one thing they really need to keep in mind," Sorenson told CBS This Morning. "These boys aren't used to being in the water; they don't even know how to swim."

As of Monday afternoon, eight boys had been saved from the cave. The boys, ages 11-16, and their 25-year-old coach, became stranded when they went exploring inside after a practice game.

"We don't even let people start cave training until they are at least 18 years of age," Sorenson said.

Operations were temporarily stopped until morning in Thailand, so rescuers have more light to see.
