Murals unveiled at FL Capitol honoring Trayvon Martin

Tallahassee, Florida - A Florida artist joins the protesters at the Florida Capitol on the 25th day of their continuing vigil and unveils a painting and mural in honor of Trayvon Martin.

Miami-based artist Huong unveiled a painting Friday called "We Are All Trayvon Martin" in the Capitol rotunda.

It graphically depicts a George Zimmerman-like image firing a handgun at a blood-soaked hoodie with a mirror over the person's face.

Jesse Paz, who helped with the project, says that image offers a lesson to everyone.

"What happened could have been any of us. So this isn't just an African American issue. It's also a Latino issue, an Asian issue, a white American issue. It's an everybody issue."

Ms. Huong has also produced a sprawling mural that's 50-feet long and 8-feet high. "The American Color Mural" contains illustrations of those who have fought for freedom and equality around the world, including Abraham Lincoln, Nelson Mandela and Rosa Parks.

The mural contains a lot of blank spaces and people are encouraged to write down their thoughts about the Trayvon Martin shooting and social issues.

Ms. Huong hopes the pieces of art spark debate about what kind of society we all want.

"It leaves a space for you, for the public. You are important. What do you think? How do you want to change? What do you want the government to do for us? We can change. But justice, that's what we're sticking for. Justice for you, justice for me, justice for everybody and we are all equal."

Ms. Huong is a Vietnam War refugee who fled the country when the war ended in 1975. Her art has focused on a message of peace.

Now her artworks head back to Miami and Ms. Huong hopes to display them in Washington, D.C. as well.
