Hernando Sheriff crashes into canal to avoid hitting deer

Deputy David Merced was heading North on Shoal Line Blvd. when he saw the animal and veered to the west, partially submerging his patrol care in a canal north of Petite Lane.

HERNANDO BEACH, FLA-- A Hernando County Sheriff's Deputy crashed his car into a canal early Monday morning when he swerved to avoid hitting a deer he says was standing in the road.

Deputy David Merced was heading North on Shoal Line Blvd. when he saw the animal and veered to the west, partially submerging his patrol care in a canal north of Petite Lane.

Emergency workers came to the scene to help Merced out of his car.

He was not injured.

The incident is under investigation.
